COMMUNITY
Support a local chef in Wichita

It was the diagnosis that nobody ever wants to hear. The longtime chef at Kobe Japanese Steakhouse, Fred Winter, was recently diagnosed with late stage liver cancer.
And now the restaurant, it’s staff, and the community are rallying behind Winter to help him.
Doctors have given Winter up to 3 months if he doesn’t respond to chemotherapy which starts this month.
If you would like to help, a GoFundMe was created with over $15,000 raised so far.
On top of that, Kobe Japanese Steakhouse, where Winter has worked for 20 years, is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with all proceeds going to help the family with medical expenses. The restaurant isn’t typically open for lunch but will for one day to support Winter’s fight against cancer.
You can call and make a reservation: 316-558-3331.

WEEKLY MINI FEATURE
Calvin’s Hamburger Haven

2417 S. Seneca St.
Who should we feature in next week’s mini-feature? Readers decide who we promote for free in the newsletter
This week’s Mini-Feature was suggested by Kim Kasenberg who recommends the burgers and okra.
After 30+ years of being on south Seneca, Calvin’s Hamburger Haven made the move back in 2022 a few blocks south to the former NuWay space that closed in 2021. They can now be found at 2417 S. Seneca St.
Staying on Seneca kept them in the same area of town and gave them more space and the ever important drive-thru.
Calvin fans can find the same menu and quick-service, but with a roomier and nicer space. Their burgers aren’t your typical fair, you can get a Hawaiian burger, Chorizo cheeseburger, pepperoni cheeseburger, BBQ cheeseburger, peanut butter burger and even a hot Cheetos cheeseburger.
Hours are Monday through Thursday from 10am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 10:30pm and Sunday from 10:30am to 9pm.
