COMMUNITY
Colvin Taste of Home May Festival
Every now and then, I get to do some really cool things.
I want to give a shoutout to Colvin Elementary. Last week, the school held a Taste of Home May Festival.
Students were tasked with bringing something that represents their home or family. There was food and dancing all to show off all the culture that lives within the walls of Colvin.
I had the lucky honor of being the sole food judge for the event. After trying dishes from many different cultures, I chose a winner (it wasn’t easy).
I went with a Venezuelan empanada and tizana. The child was then awarded best chef in a presentation after the festival was over.

NOW OPEN
Nguyen Kitchen
A new Vietnamese restaurant in Wichita hopes to bring different flavors and a diverse menu that people typically don’t find at the fast-casual Asian spots. That’s the goal behind Nguyen Kitchen who just opened earlier this month at 1444 N. Maize Road in the Wok Hey space that closed in January.
GUIDES
Asian-Owned Restaurants
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
As the son of a Vietnamese immigrant, I figured why not represent my culture and show it some love.
Throughout the month, I’ll showcase some awesome Asian-owned restaurants, eateries, and coffee shops. Save this blog and check back again later to see the newest additions!
LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
Eight Years of Wheat Street Dogs
Eight years ago while perusing the streets of downtown Wichita, I came across a vegan hot dog cart in front of Barleycorns called Wheat Street Dogs. They serve handcrafted meat-free street dogs & sausages made here in Wichita.
And because of the quality of the food and the goodwill they’ve built within the community, here they are eight years later.

MUST TRY DISH
Carne En Su Jugo
Last time at Sazon Mexican Restaurant, I went with the carne en su jugo. It’s one of my favorite soups, and I haven’t had it in some time.
It’s a traditional Mexican soup made with thinly sliced beef and cooked in a broth made from the meat’s own juices.
Everyone has their favorite Mexican soups. Some love pozole, menudo, caldo de pollo, but my favorite is carne en su jugo.
There’s a tanginess to it that really hits with my taste buds. Sazon offered a wonderful, tasty version that was smoky, spicy, and savory. Each spoonful had an acidic punch that kept me going back for more. And the beef was super tender.
