COMMUNITY
Cash Mob at The James & Rye

Something I’ve always wanted to do is a little cash mob to support a locally owned restaurant. For over a decade, the city and community have invested in me and I always want to pay it forward and invest in the community. After talking to readers online and friends, it’s time to mark your calendars for Monday, January 26, from 4pm to 6:30 p.m. at The James & Rye in downtown Wichita.

This cocktail bar is located at 917 E. Douglas Ave.

What is a cash mob?

A cash mob is a group of people who assemble at a local business to make purchases. The purpose of these mobs is to support both the local businesses and the overall community.

What’s the plan?

It’s simple. I’ve given The James & Rye a heads up that we are coming and that eventually led to a planning meeting to ensure everything is organized just in case the bar gets pretty busy.

For starters, there will be a limited cocktail menu with beers available as well. This will help with the flow and take the burden off the bartenders from having to spend more time making some of the more time intensive cocktails the bar is known for. The pared-down menu was put together by Una Vida Tequila and Hi-Post Vodka.

Better yet, I’ll help cover the first 50 or so drinks just to kind of lead by example and put my money where my mouth is. All I ask is that you take care of the bartenders and pay it forward that way. This is my way of saying thank you to those who come and putting my money where my mouth is to support these businesses.

NEWS
Blogs You Missed

Let’s catch you up on the blogs you may have missed over the past week from our website, Facebook or Instagram.

Reading should be accessible and affordable for all. That’s where ICT Books comes into play. The used bookstore recently relocated to 2243 S Meridian Ave which is near the intersection of Pawnee and Meridian.

They are Wichita’s only used book and media warehouse where all books, CDs and DVDs are $1.25. And they don’t take the word warehouse lightly as there are over 50,000 items in stock.

  • What’s taking over Sticky Bird (more)

  • Vietnamese restaurant coming to NewMarket (more)

  • BUrgetCO in El Dorado (more)

  • Local Flavor Revisited (more)

  • Some of the best bierocks (more)

  • Books for $1.25 (more)

EVENTS
Record Shows in Wichita

After getting into vinyls last year, I’ve been making my way to the various record shops, antique stores and vendor markets around town. But one thing I’ve never done is attend one of the swap meets or record shows.

I finally knocked that off my list when I stopped by the Wichita Record Show at Maize City Hall. The show takes place every other month (i.e. the odd months, January, March, May, etc) and usually runs from noon to 3 p.m. Best of all, it’s free to attend!

There’s also a record show/swap meet in Hutchinson on the even months at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 1200 W. 15th. That one is also free to attend.
